Dealing with Depression
It's very important to seek some trusted help when dealing with depression We may not feel like even admitting to ourselves that we are feeling depressed, let alone anyone else!
We all feel sad from time to time because of what life throws at us, but when it becomes prolonged and we start to lose interest in all of life, feel despondent, worthless and become isolated from others then we really need to talk to someone about it, because depression is very common, you don't have to suffer alone and it can be cured. Fear and isolation are very common in anyone suffering from depression & important factors to identify, when dealing with depression, isolation tends to reinforce feelings of despair and hopelessness. Many people who suffer from depression find it hard to talk about and may try to keep it hidden.
Personally I've found that some people are afraid of other people's mental suffering and don't want to even discuss it, maybe because they are afraid of "catching it" or more likely because it hooks into there own hidden darkness and suffering and they don't want to go there. Attitudes are gradually changing, but for some the very word depression still holds a negative stigma! The truth is........ we can all be prone to depression at some time in our lives. it is not a sign of being weak, It's just part of being human!
A big thing to realize is that depression is not the real you! it seems to have taken possession of you, but that is a temporary situation and you will be able reveal the real you again in time (often a much stronger, courageous version of yourself) Many people do need medical help when dealing with depression and consulting a medical practitioner should always the first place to go. At first medication is often needed to correct any chemical imbalances, especially if you are suffering from anxiety.
However there are many things you can do to help yourself (speaking as someone who has overcome depression) gradual small changes to your lifestyle can make a big differenceIt can be hard at first and it does require effort on your part, but it's taking the action that will help you recover. The problem is the nature of depression makes it difficult to stay focused and motivated but be patient with yourself - it can take time to feel better and you may well take two steps forward and one step back, but give yourself a reward for any small challenge you take. Sometimes you may have to push yourself to do things, when you really don’t feel like it. but just taking that first step will make you feel much better. Dealing with depression - It's important to know that depression can be used as the catalyst to your to turn your life around and to grow stronger because of it!
Every day set yourself one small challenge and reward yourself for achieving it. but it's really important you don't beat yourself up if you don't manage it yet!
Go for a walk or do some exercise - this will help raise endorphins in your brain (the feel good hormones) and relieve fatigue, getting fresh air and being close to nature is good for your well being, even just 10-15 minutes can have a positive effect on your mood. Sunlight is really good to raise your spirits especially in winter, try and get out in the sun whenever possible, it will boost your vitamin D levels which will be helpful when dealing with depression.
Phone a relative or friend - be honest about how you are feeling and ask for support, but also tell them what you are doing to help yourself.
Watch some funny comedy you like on T.V or D.V.D. Laughter is very healing!
Pets are renowned for their positive effects on people with depression and anxiety they love your affection and they’ll give their love back to you.
Try to master your mind - every time a negative thought comes into your head say "no I refuse to have thoughts like that in my head" - Would you put rotting, toxic food in your body? don't pollute your mind with toxic, negative thoughts either. Try to replace each negative thought with a positive one.
Joining a support group can be very helpful - to help you relate to other people who are also suffering and to support each other. It's nice to know that others often suffer similar issues to you and can help you to feel that you are not alone. Seek out people you can trust.
Join a club or social meeting where you can meet other people that like doing the same things as you and have fun together.
Try relaxation and meditation techniques, or yoga all very helpful for dealing with depression anxiety and stress.
Psychotherapy and counseling can be very helpful on a regular basis particularly C.B.T. (Cognitive behavioral therapy) your Doctor may be able to refer you for treatment.
Another thing that is probably one of the best, but hardest things to do when you're depressed is to go and help someone else! in what ever way you can - This takes the focus off yourself and it can be extremely rewarding and make you feel good about yourself.
Connecting with positive people can sometimes make you feel worse at first but don't give up,let their positive energy rub off on you - over time this can be really beneficial
Help and be helped!
Be aware of people who put you down, or are not supportive to you and avoid them as much as you can.
Lack of sleep can be major cause of depression try to get about 8 hours. Too much sleep can also cause a low mood. Try not be too inactive as that can cause anxiety.
Don't take on too much too soon and learn to say "no" to people without feeling guilty and try to eliminate as many stressful situations as possible, It's important to respect your life, then others will too.
When things go wrong, or not the way you wanted, don't react with shock, horror, or despair! try to respond in a positive way. Each time you do this you get stronger and grow more emotionally mature.
Cook yourself some delicious, nutritious, healthy food. Eating a healthy balanced diet with a variety of fresh vegetables. Eat 3 meals a day, don't skip meals as this can affect your mood. Avoid sugar, junk foods, alcohol and stimulants will help you reduce stress.
Be kind and loving to yourself - don't beat your self up if you don't manage to achieve these challenges everyday, that will just create more stress, just re-determine to do it the next day and remember that taking all these steps will gradually help you to feel better, if you persevere with them. And be patient with yourself - you need to have compassion for your self. Are you are holding on to old grudges and bad feelings from past events in your life? First learn to forgive yourself then you can forgive others too and let go of the negative feelings this is an essential part of dealing with depression.
