Recent studies on the links between health fitness & happiness have shown that people who are generally happy, are less likely to become ill when exposed to a virus, or if they do catch a cold, people of a positive and happy disposition seem to experience fewer symptoms!
The research found that positive emotions such as optimism, extraversion, feelings of purpose in life and self-esteem associated with happiness seem to give most people more resistance to infectious diseases
If you're happy - you are likely to be healthier over time!
Another study found that people who reported to have high levels of happiness and life satisfaction are more likely a few years later to report good health.
Happiness enhances health!
Based on the findings of these studies It appears that if you are happy and satisfied with your life now, you are more likely to be healthy in the future. These findings were independent of several factors that impact on health, such as smoking, physical activity, alcohol consumption and age.
Satisfaction with your life - no matter what your circumstances are - irrespective of how much money you have - or don't have! or having the perfect relationship or career - or not! seems to be linked to having a strong immune system which enhances good health!
People with more serious health problems - cope much better with a positive and happy outlook!
A study in the United States found that people who reported happiness, hope, and love - kept their youthfulness in their adult years and were likely to live longer.
The link between health fitness and happiness through exercise has long been known!
There are many reasons why exercise is good for the body - but it is also very good for the mind!
We know that exercise can help us keep our weight down and keep us flexible. It can also help lower blood pressure - cholesterol and triglycerides strengthen our bones and lower the risk of cancer.
Exercise can also help us beat depression and lower our stress levels which contribute to good health fitness and happiness.
Exercise releases endorphins in the brain - hormones that make you feel good!
We all know exercise is good for us - but many of us still hate it?
If like me, you're not the sort of person who likes going to the gym - try walking as much as possible - fast walking for half an hour daily or even three times a week if you can - makes quite an impact on fitness levels. Of course swimming, yoga or Pilates are more gentle and really help to strengthen the core muscles
Choose something to you enjoy - that feels right for you and your individual lifestyle!
Whatever form of exercise you choose - set yourself realistic goals - start off slowly and gradually build up the amount of time you spend exercising - if you are really unfit, just 5 to 10 minutes 2 - 3 times a week to start with is enough, until you can build up your strength, then gradually increase the amount you do as you start to feel fitter and stronger. This approach helps to prevent fatigue and aching muscles - which is what leads many people to give up on it!
Many people tend to give up exercising - if they do too much too soon!
It's also helpful for motivation - to keep a record of your progress, so you can see where you started from, measure the improvements you're making and see how far you've come!
Enough regular sleep is an essential factor for our good health fitness and happiness!
Stress can cause insomnia - because the body produces adrenalin as a response to stress which can disrupt our sleep.
Good sleep is essential for our well being - it keeps us alert and can help us to have a more positive frame of mind - it can also help prevent us having accidents!
Overall a holistic approach to happiness that looks after and respects body mind and spirit is the best way to your optimum heath fitness and happiness.
